How old were you when you ran your first marathon?

For Gladys Burrill, it was at age 86!  The former pilot and mountain climber hasn’t stopped since then.  She regularly walks 45 miles per week and shows no sign of slowing down.

In December, she ran the Honolulu marathon making her the Guinness World Record holder for oldest marathon runner.  She trained for the marathon by walking 2600 miles.

Though her time was just shy of 10 hours, imagine the perseverance and fortitude it takes for anyone to run a marathon – let alone a 92-year-old.  This marathon was her fifth.

What are her secrets to longevity and fitness?

“to get out there and walk or run.”  Further, she says “It’s so important to think positive.  It’s easy to get discouraged and be negative.  It makes such a difference in how you feel and your outlook on everything.”

Isn’t that the truth?  POSITIVE ATTITUDE!  That’s what it’s all about.  I had a professor in college who said “it’s not your aptitude, but your attitude, that determines your altitude.”  He’s now in jail for insider trading, but that quote is priceless and has stuck with me ever since.
